John Bowlby’s attachment theory offers a framework for understanding intimacy and relationship dynamics in close relationships in adulthood. Individual differences in the way adults think, feel, and behave in close relationships have been conceptualized in terms of activation and regulation of the attachment system. In this talk, I will present some of my work that examines the effects of attachment working models on social perception processes. My research found that individual differences in adult attachment style were related to systematic differences in making judgment about others’ personality characteristics. Further, I will present results from an ongoing study that examines emotional communication in close relationships. Our finding suggests that intimacy and familiarity do lead to better and more efficient emotional communication between two individuals and this communicative efficiency resides more in the detection and decoding of subtle, temporal, and dynamic facial cues than in the decoding of full facial expressions of emotions.
